Esports at Ackerson High School
Ackerson High School is now part of the Michigan High School Esports Federation (MiHSEF). According to their website, MiHSEF's mission is to provide a safe, high-quality, and competitive esports environment for Michigan high school and middle school students while promoting the importance of preparation, communication, sportsmanship, collaboration, and the ability to process successes and failures.
The Ackerson team competes against other high school teams from all over the State of Michigan. The league selects team-oriented video games for competition each season. This season, the league is offering OverWatch 2, Rocket League, and SMITE. The games are strategic in nature and students must work together as a team to be successful. For their first ever season, AHS students are competing in OverWatch 2. So far this season, they have 1 win and 1 tie. They have improved each week and students have shown significant growth working together as a team.
Scrimmages and regular season games are played remotely from the Ackerson High School computer lab. They started this season the week of February 13th with a scrimmage on February 14th. The regular season started the week of February 20th and has continued from there. The first round of the state playoffs will be held remotely on Saturday, May 6th if they qualify. The remaining rounds of the state playoffs will be held in person Saturday, May 13th at University of Michigan Flint Campus at their professional gaming facility.
Mr. Lake, AHS teacher and Esports coach said, "I am very pleased with the progress our students have shown throughout this season. They are having fun, getting school work done, and learning a few life skills all at the same time. We are all looking forward to the fall season and we have even more students who would like to participate in the fall."
